Statement from NAIC President and Montana Insurance Commissioner Monica J. Lindeen on Hurricane Joaquin

"Hurricane Joaquin is intensifying. While the path of the storm is unknown, it could reach the East Coast as early as Oct. 2. According to the National Hurricane Center as the morning of Oct. 1. Joaquin is currently battering the Bahamas. It's a Category 3 hurricane with the potential to become a Category 4 later today. Even if the storm remains at sea, its effects could still cause damage to the mid-Atlantic.

The NAIC is committed to providing resources and coordinating support services during disaster recovery as needed. In the aftermath of major disaster responses such as hurricanes, tornadoes and super storms, the NAIC coordinated multi-state responses to assist affected consumers through whatever means necessary, including special call centers and on site consumer assistance. Once again, we stand together prepared to help.

Mitigation and education are the best ways to brace for possible losses in a disastrous weather event. The My Home Scrap Book App helps consumers create and maintain a home inventory, which is one of the best ways to insure you have adequate coverage on your home and belongings. It also makes filing an accurate claim easier. The NAIC also offers tips on disaster preparedness including consumer alerts, to-do lists after a storm hits and how to file a claim after a loss.

The NAIC is ready to help state insurance departments and consumers prepare for severe weather and we'll be working together to assist affected consumers."
