Connecticut Insurance Commissioner Andrew N. Mais Discusses AI Oversight

On Thursday, Aug. 21, NAIC Immediate Past President and Connecticut Insurance Commissioner Andrew N. Mais delivered a keynote speech at the East Asia Pacific Insurance Forum 2025 in Taipei, Taiwan. The theme of this year’s Forum was “Tapping into the Power of the AI Ecosystem,” and Commissioner Mais’ speech, “Shaping AI Governance in the Insurance Industry: Global Insights and Perspectives,” focused on U.S. state insurance regulators’ work on AI oversight.

Commissioner Mais discussed the NAIC’s Model AI Bulletin, the ongoing work to refine privacy protections, and the intersection of AI and cybersecurity. He also highlighted how state insurance regulators are studying the use of AI across insurance lines, specifically describing the NAIC’s recent AI surveys.

The following day, Commissioner Mais participated in a bilateral meeting with Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) Chair Dr. Jin-Lung Peng and representatives from the FSC’s Insurance Bureau and the Taiwan Insurance Institute. During the meeting, they exchanged views on closing protection gaps, AI supervision, and innovative products.

About the National Association of Insurance Commissioners

As part of our state-based system of insurance regulation in the United States, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) provides expertise, data, and analysis for insurance commissioners to effectively regulate the industry and protect consumers. The U.S. standard-setting organization is governed by the chief insurance regulators from the 50 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories. Through the NAIC, state insurance regulators establish standards and best practices, conduct peer reviews, and coordinate regulatory oversight. NAIC staff supports these efforts and represents the collective views of state regulators domestically and internationally.
