The change in wind performance of asphalt shingles with age and weathering is one of the most challenging research problems currently facing the building science community. New research by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) of asphalt shingle performance in Louisiana during Hurricane Laura (2020) and in Iowa during the 2020 Midwest derecho describes how shingle age is a significant indicator of vulnerability to wind damage for roofs as young as 10 years old.
