Robert L. “Bob” Carey was nominated as Maine’s Superintendent of the Maine Bureau of Insurance by Gov. Janet Mills and confirmed by the state senate in February 2024.

In this role, Superintendent Carey and the Bureau of Insurance work on behalf of Maine residents and businesses to protect consumers and employers, promote a competitive and fair market, and ensure that all insurance markets work efficiently and effectively.

Superintendent Carey previously worked as an independent consultant specializing in strategic planning, commercial health insurance, and public health coverage programs. Prior to his work as a consultant, he served as the Director of Planning and Development for the Massachusetts Health Insurance Connector Authority. He also served as the Director of Policy and Program Management for the Massachusetts Group Insurance Commission, the state agency responsible for providing health and welfare benefits to state and municipal employees.

A resident of East Boothbay, ME, Superintendent Carey volunteers at the regional food bank and helps split, deliver, and stack firewood for members of his community.

Superintendent Carey earned a master’s degree in public management and policy from Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, PA) and a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Maine at Fort Kent (Fort Kent, ME).

The Bureau of Insurance is an independent regulatory agency within the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation responsible for regulating the insurance industry to protect and serve the people of Maine.
