James Brown was elected by the people of Montana to serve as State Auditor on Nov. 5, 2024. He was sworn into office on Jan. 6, 2025.
As Montana's 18th State Auditor, Brown pledges to build on the solid record of his predecessor, Commissioner Troy Downing, to promote consumer education and consumer advocacy, work to lower insurance costs by promoting competition, reduce the regulatory burden on Montana businesses, and hold bad actors accountable.
Commissioner Brown most recently served the people of Montana as president of the Montana Public Service Commission (PSC). Prior to assuming public office, Commissioner Brown owned and operated his own law firm.
Commissioner Brown earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the Seattle University School of Law, a master’s degree in tax law from the University of Washington School of Law, and a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from the University of Montana.
The Montana State Auditor's Office is an accountable, responsive agency serving and safeguarding Montana consumers by regulating the insurance and securities industries, investigating fraud, and prosecuting criminals.
