Non-Resident Licensing Checklist for Business Entities
Applicants for a Business Entity North Dakota non-resident insurance producer license must apply electronically through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). Paper applications will only be accepted when computer programming will not support the submission of an electronic application. Please contact the Department before submitting a paper application.
Organizational Documents
- To ensure compliance with North Dakota corporate law, business entities should contact the North Dakota Secretary of State's office by telephone 701-328-4284; email – sosbir@nd.gov; or website – www.nd.gov/sos
License Requirements
- Business entity must have at least one Designated Responsible Producer with an active North Dakota license for the same line(s) of authority.
Surplus Lines Licensing
- If your resident surplus lines license information is not available on the NAIC Producer DataBase (PDB), include Letter of Certification* (within 90 days of issuance).
Appointment Requirements
No initial appointment with the application is required.
- The appointing insurer shall file the notice of appointment within 30 days from the later of the date the agency contract is executed or the first insurance application is submitted.
- The appointment fee is $10.00 for each company appointment.
- Unless there are compelling reasons to submit on paper, companies should file agent appointments and terminations electronically through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR).

Applicants for an individual North Dakota non-resident insurance producer license must apply electronically through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). - Applicants must hold a like resident license in your home state and be in compliance with the continuing education requirements in your home state.
- Provide NASD CRD number if applying for variable life/annuity
(applicant must be a licensed North Dakota Securities Salesperson).

Privacy Statement
"Pursuant to North Dakota Century Code § 26.1-26-30, the disclosure of the individual's social security number on the Uniform Application for Individual Non-Resident License is mandatory. The individual's social security number is used for identifying purposes in the processing of the license application. The North Dakota Department of Insurance will provide the social security number to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and the National Insurance Producer Registry for inclusion in their respective producer databases."
