Non-Resident Licensing Checklist for Business Entities
Organizational Documents
- Most Foreign business entities (except partnerships) may need to register with the Ohio Secretary of State (OSOS) prior to doing business in OH. Contact OSOS at 614-466-2655 or www.sos.state.oh.us to verify if business entity needs to register with OSOS in addition to obtaining an OH Insurance License.
- Include Letter of Certification* (within 90 days of issuance)
*Letter of Certification not required if resident states participates in the NAIC Producer Database
- Non-Resident reciprocity is only for the same lines of authority held in resident state.
- Ohio requires at least one Ohio licensed agent be designated as the business entities responsible agent. Ohio does not require that the agent designated to act on behalf of the business entity be an officer or partner in the business entity. The designee need only be licensed as an agent in the State of Ohio.
- Submit $10.00 license fee for each Line of Authority. If mailing application to the Department, make checks payable to The State of Ohio Treasurer.
Appointment Requirements
- No initial appointment is required with the application for license. The appointing insurer shall file the notice of appointment within 30 days from the later of the date the agency contract is executed or the first insurance application is submitted.
Non-Resident Licensing Checklist for Individuals
Other Requirements
- Include Letter of Certification (within 90 days of issuance)
*Letter of Certification is not required if applicant's resident state participates in the NAIC Producer Database (PDB)
- Non-Resident reciprocity is only for the same lines of authority held in resident state.
- Provide CRD# on application if applying for Variable Product authority in home state.
- Submit $10.00 license fee for each Line of Authority. If mailing application to the Department, make checks payable to The State of Ohio Treasurer.

Resident Licensing Checklist for Individuals
First Time Applicants (Exam Required)
- Complete pre-license education from an Ohio approved provider prior to taking examination. (The education is valid for 180 calendar days from the course completion date.)
- Register and schedule examination
- Take and pass examination.
- Complete Application. Download paper application or complete online application. (Exam must be successfully passed prior to submitting a license application.)
- Submit $10.00 license fee for each Line of Authority. If mailing application to the Department, make checks payable to The State of Ohio Treasurer.
- Complete an Ohio background check. (View ODI's website for authorized WebCheck locations.)
- Submit any additional documents, if required, to the Department.
If application type does Not require an examination (Limited Lines):
- Complete application. Download paper application or complete online application.
- Submit $10.00 license fee for each Line of Authority. If mailing application to the Department, make checks payable to The State of Ohio Treasurer.
If licensed in another state and changing home state to Ohio:
- Include a Letter of Clearance from your previous resident state. (You must apply in Ohio within 90 days of the date the license was terminated in your previous state in order to be exempt from having to complete pre-licensing education and examination.
- Reciprocity is only allowed for those lines of authority held in your previous resident state.
- Submit $10.00 license fee for each Line of Authority. If mailing application to the Department, make checks payable to The State of Ohio Treasurer.
