CIPR Summer Session: Measuring and Assessing (Homeowner) Insurance Affordability

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Center for Insurance Policy and Research (CIPR) will discuss U.S. insurance costs and affordability challenges during their session at the NAIC’s 2024 Summer National Meeting.  Meeting participants can attend virtually or in person, August 14 at the McCormick Place Convention Center S101—Level 1 in Chicago, Illinois from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. CDT.

The event will include a presentation on cost trends in insurance, focusing largely on homeowner property insurance, as well as focus on insurance affordability metrics and how that data has changed over time, along with a panel discussion moderated by CIPR Director Jeff Czajkowski.

NAIC Consumer Representative Amy Bach (United Policyholders), Vickie Kilgore (Insurance Research Council), and Dr. Lars Powell (University of Alabama) will join Jeff to discuss the causes and consequences of cost trends and the implications for insurance affordability, including the best ways to measure affordability. The panelists will also discuss the options consumers have when facing affordability issues and how often or well they are aware of and use these options.

About the National Association of Insurance Commissioners

As part of our state-based system of insurance regulation in the United States, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) provides expertise, data, and analysis for insurance commissioners to effectively regulate the industry and protect consumers. The U.S. standard-setting organization is governed by the chief insurance regulators from the 50 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories. Through the NAIC, state insurance regulators establish standards and best practices, conduct peer reviews, and coordinate regulatory oversight. NAIC staff supports these efforts and represents the collective views of state regulators domestically and internationally.
