Host Welcome Letter
Dear Friends:
Welcome to Orlando, Florida for the 2019 National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Spring National Meeting.
I am pleased you could all join us here in the Sunshine State. Aside from the abundance of tropical weather and warm temperatures, Florida is home to one of the nation’s strongest economies and business- and consumer-friendly tax environments. We also have one of the largest insurance markets in the world. Florida delivers as an attractive place to live and work for more than 20 million people and Florida’s insurance industry plays a vital role in our economic success.
As Insurance Commissioner for the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR), I am honored to oversee a staff of more than 257 individuals who all work to accomplish our mission of promoting a stable and competitive insurance market for consumers and the more than 4,300 insurance-related entities we regulate.
The responsibility bestowed upon each insurance regulator to maintain a healthy insurance market that works to have reliable insurance products available at affordable prices is an ongoing commitment. By actively participating in regulatory policy formation and standard-setting practices through the NAIC, we are able to exchange ideas and address emerging conditions in the marketplace; thereby, strengthening the foundation of our state-based regulatory system while safeguarding our consumers.
It is my hope we will use this collaborative environment to strengthen our existing regulatory networks while building upon our successes and regulatory efficiencies. I look forward to our discussions over the next few days and all that we will accomplish.
In your free time, I encourage you to explore the city of Orlando and take advantage of its world-famous shopping, dining, and other attractions. Thank you for visiting Florida and I hope you enjoy the 2019 NAIC Spring National Meeting.
Sincerely,
David Altmaier
About the National Association of Insurance Commissioners
As part of our state-based system of insurance regulation in the United States, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) provides expertise, data, and analysis for insurance commissioners to effectively regulate the industry and protect consumers. The U.S. standard-setting organization is governed by the chief insurance regulators from the 50 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories. Through the NAIC, state insurance regulators establish standards and best practices, conduct peer reviews, and coordinate regulatory oversight. NAIC staff supports these efforts and represents the collective views of state regulators domestically and internationally.
