NAIC Congratulates IBHS on FORTIFIED Milestone
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) congratulates the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) on surpassing 100,000 FORTIFIED®-designated homes.
While risks posed by severe weather cannot be eliminated, state insurance regulators work to help families and communities prepare before disaster strikes—reducing risk, improving insurability, and empowering faster recovery.
Through collaboration with IBHS and key partners, the NAIC’s Catastrophe Risk Management Center of Excellence (COE) provides resources and technical expertise to help state departments of insurance develop, implement, and enhance resilience-focused programs, including existing mitigation grant initiatives.
The COE supports these efforts by offering guidance on program design and operations, as well as contributing to legislation and policy through written and oral testimony. It also advances innovative approaches to address hurricane, severe storm, and wildfire risks, helping foster a culture of resilience in insurance markets.
Additionally, the COE delivers technical tools such as data-driven grant prioritization and mitigation discount benchmarks to help ensure efficient use of funds and appropriate insurance premium reductions for homeowners.
The COE's work also importantly helps to support the broader goals of the NAIC’s Natural Catastrophe Risk and Resilience (EX) Task Force and its working groups to enhance catastrophe risk resilience activities across all NAIC Members.
To strengthen stakeholder engagement, NAIC facilitates IBHS facility visits for state leaders and partners, showcasing the value of FORTIFIED and Wildfire Prepared programs while promoting collaboration to improve resilience, protect consumers, and maintain access to insurance coverage.
We look forward to continuing to work with partners like IBHS to make homes and homeowners’ insurance more resilient.
