NAIC to Host Screening and Panel Discussion Focused on Big Data and Artificial Intelligence

Kansas City, MO (March 11, 2021) – The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) announced today that it will host a special screening of the film Coded Bias followed by a panel discussion about Big Data and Artificial Intelligence on March 31, 2021.
The documentary Coded Bias follows Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab Researcher, Joy Buolamwini, as she discovers facial recognition technology’s racial bias and pushes for legislation to protect people against bias in algorithms.
At 1:30 PM CT on March 31, 2021, Scott Kosnoff, Partner at Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP, will moderate a discussion on the topic of Big Data/Artificial Intelligence. Panelists include the film’s director, Shalini Kantayya; North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread; author of Weapons of Math Destruction, Cathy O’Neil; Birny Birnbaum from the Center for Economic Justice; and Director of Integrated Analytics, Munich RE, Hareem Naveed.
The NAIC is committed to advancing innovations but continues to examine the benefits and potential unintended consequences arising from the use of non-insurance consumer data. With the adoption of AI Principles for the insurance industry, the NAIC is committed to developing regulatory practices that monitor and oversee the industry’s compliance while still promoting pro-consumer innovation.
The special screening of the film Coded Bias and the discussion is one way the NAIC, and its Innovation & Technology Task Force and Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Working Group can assess information about Artificial Intelligence.
