Julia Dreier was appointed Temporary Commissioner of Commerce in August 2026.
Temporary Commissioner Dreier was appointed in 2021 as Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Commerce’s Insurance Division. The Division serves Minnesotans through insurance policy and regulation, including licensing, examinations, policy, and rate reviews for health, homeowners, auto, workers’ compensation, long-term care (LTC), and life insurance, as well as pharmacy benefits management.
Prior to joining the Department of Commerce, Temporary Commissioner Dreier worked at IMPAQ International, a global policy research and analytics firm, and she provided strategic policy and operational advice to the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). She served on the leadership team for the CMS’ Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight (CCIIO) and led efforts to implement the Affordable Care Act (ACA) commercial insurance market reforms. Temporary Commissioner Dreier also worked in public policy for the Minnesota Council of Health Plans and for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
